What is a root canal?

Root canal therapy is a treatment that attempts to save a tooth that has been severely damaged and diseased. After our gentle dentists have cleaned the tooth and removed any damaged tissue, they will insert a medicated material into the cavity in order to repair the tooth and restore it to optimal health. After the root canal, the tooth may be capped with a dental crown in order to give the tooth further protection.

Do I need a root canal?

If you have been experiencing extreme pain in your tooth, it is advised that you seek the opinion of a trained dentist. If damage and disease has extended into your dental pulp tissue, it may be necessary to perform a root canal to clean the inside of the tooth and protect it from further damage.

Does a root canal hurt?

Despite popular belief, root canal treatment is actually not that painful. Modern technology has improved the root canal procedure so that the discomfort experienced during a root canal is no more uncomfortable than a standard filling would be. For the comfort of our patients, Dr. Meltzer and Dr. Hsieh will work with you to determine what type of anesthesia and sedation will be the best choice for your procedure.
